The Strategic Process

  • Goal setting – Mission statement, financial summary
  • Situation review – marketplace, opportunities, threats, strengths, weaknesses, portfolio summary
  • Strategy formulation :–
    • Objectives: product mix, product development, product deletion, market extension, target customer groups
    • Strategies: positioning, price, promotion, presentation/ place
  • Resource allocation and monitoring – requirements, forecasts, budgets; measurement and review.

The heart of the process is to strongly identify your core capabilities, to create the platform for competitive advantage; then to plan to exploit your advantages, and make them sustainable against competitive activity

The Way Forward
However, the process is not an end in itself. Strategic marketing is not about producing beautiful plans, which do not happen. The key questions asked above need to be debated honestly, to produce viable, actionable strategies.
